The weather forecast for today was cold and snow, especially in the area of Ouray and Silverton which are on the "Million Dollar Highway". This road is through the San Juan Mountains and very scenic but with lots of turns, sheer drop offs and no guardrails. Given they were forecast to get up to a foot of snow, we detoured south on our way to Durango.

Even with our southerly route, we spent half of the drive in mixed precipitation but there was no snow build up on the road. Temperatures were around 32F. We could really not see much of the scenery because of the rain, sleet, snow, clouds. Here we re-enter Colorado.

We stopped at Mesa Verdes National Park to eat lunch (in the car with the heater on).

When we got to Durango, the temperature had risen into the 40's and the sun came out but the wind was gusting to 50 mph.

We went downtown to book our narrow gauge steam train trip to Silverton tomorrow. Here is the train station.

After that, we spent an hour or so walking around the downtown. A great area with lots of shops and restaurants.

After checking in to the motel, we went for a walk for a few miles down the Animas River Trail which runs through the town of Durango for several miles.

We saw the train returning from its trip to Silverton.

We went out to a cool pub downtown for supper, Lady Falconburgh's Barley Exchange. Monday night had some great specials including $2 pints from a selection of over 100 beers.
Tonight is forecast to go down to 20F. Brrrrrrr!
