Friday November 12, 2010

The early morning temperature in Prescott Valley AZ was 24F this morning but it warmed up quickly as the sun rose. Our destination for today was Las Vegas.

We has a very scenic drive on highway 89 though the Kirkland Valley (I think that's where they make all of the Costco products). There was a great overview coming down out of the mountains. What you see in the middle of the picture is a huge cattle feeding station complete with sun shades for the cattle. That must be why that Costco beef tastes so good!

We passed one huge ranch which is one of the ones owned by Rex Maughan. 150,000 acres! It appears this guy was ranked the 368th richest person in the world.

Part of the highway to Nevada is called the Joshua Forest Scenic Byway. There are thousands of Joshua Trees for as far as you can see.

Crossing into Nevada, we had to stop and see the Hoover dam.

There is a new highway and bridge which spans the Colorado River just downstream of the dam. This allowed them to put a security zone around the dam rather than have the traffic pass over it. We tried to do a tour but I was refused admission because I had my Swiss army knife in my pocket. I didn't feel like giving it up or walking the 1/2 mile back to the car to get rid of it. Seen enough power plants in my day so I was not too upset and saved $22. Here are some power
plant pictures and Lake Mead.

Crossing into Nevada we gained another hour and arrived at the hotel on the strip at around 4:00 pm. Unfortunately, the sun goes down at around 4:30 here so we didn't have any daylight to do some exploring. After we got settled in, we ventured down the strip for a mile or so and saw the outdoor pirate ship battle at Treasure Island spent some time in the Venetian. Unfortunately I forgot the camera so no pictures.
