Tuesday November 16, 2010

Today we travelled 335 miles to South Lake Tahoe CA. Our original plan was to travel to Sonora CA but the highway 108 pass through the Sierras was closed for the season because of snow.

Our morning started off with a brief visit to an abandoned Borax mine site where they has an original "20 Mule Team" wagon train on display (without the mules).

We then hiked the Mosaic Canyon which is an interesting climb though a canyon that gets quite narrow at time. Some of the rock has the appearance of polished marble.

After about a 1/4 mile of narrow passages, it opened up for about 1 1/2 miles but was uphill!

Near the end the canyon was filled with boulders which we had to scramble over.

We ran out of time before we got to the end and had to retreat back to the car to get on the road north. We really enjoyed Death Valley and would have liked to spend two or three more days there if we had the time.

Most of the trip after leaving Death Valley was in Owens Canyon with several passes at 7000 to 8000 ft and the Sierra Nevada range to the west. The sun set before we got to our revised destination but as it was setting, it provided great views for the drive.

We arrived at South lake Tahoe shortly after 7:00 pm and settled in for an early evening. No problem in finding a room as ski season has not started here yet but is expected to kick off in a week or two. We passed Mamoth ski area which has been open for a week. It was a bit of a shock going from a 85F desert to ski country at 33F in about a three hour drive!
