Monday November 1, 2010

Well, we didn't have any trick or treaters last night except for the normal creatures of the desert night (bunnies, scorpions, rattlesnakes, fire ants etc.). Chris wore her hiking boots outside every time she went next door to check on the laundry (yea! clean underwear and socks). We are about 12 miles outside of Las Cruces at the Dream Catchers Inn B&B. Fairly remote but great starry skies at night!

We had a great breakfast this morning and then headed out to the White Sands National Monument which is in the White Sands Missile Range area. Hundreds of square miles of white dunes!

Ken loaned us some snow saucers to try sliding down the slopes. The first time it didn't work out too well.

We went for a hike for a couple of miles on the Alkali Trail. Good thing they had the markers as it would very easy to loose your way as your tracks fill in quickly.

We next went to the Aguirre Springs National Recreation Site and did a hike around the base of the Organ Mountains.

The trail was about 4 miles with a 1000 ft climb providing a great view of the White Sands basin. You could see the dunes in the distance about 45 miles away and hear the military practicing dropping bombs on Al Queda.

We got back to the B&B just before sunset and after a little relaxation, drove into Las Cruces for some Italian food at a nice bistro.
