Today's outing in the Sonoma CA area was a trip to Point Reyes National Seashore which is about 25 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The park is interesting in the fact that it is located west of the San Andres fault on the Pacific Plate. You can see in the photo below, the displacement of about 16 feet that occurred in this fence line during the 1906 earthquake.

The park is about 20 miles from the north tip to the south where the Point Reyes Lighthouse is located.

We went to the north end and hiked the Tomales Trail to the north tip of the park. It was about an 8 mile round trip which provided us with our first view of the Pacific Ocean on this trip.

The trail had a couple of good hills with about 1000 feet of vertical climbing.

The real interesting part were the large elk herds which inhabit the area. They seemed to be relatively undisturbed by our presence.

Looking north from the trail, you can see Bodega Bay CA.

This is not a whale, its a cool rock with a "blowhole" ...

On our way back home, we happened to see this pair of hawks on the lookout for their next meal.
